Royal Lochnagar Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(0 products)Royal Lochnagar single malt Scotch whisky is a small but historic Highland distillery, famous for its royal connection and its refined, approachable style. Nestled at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains, just a short walk from Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar was granted a Royal Warrant in 1848 after Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their three children visited the distillery during their first stay at the nearby royal estate.
The distillery’s origins date back to 1845, when John Begg established it on the banks of the River Dee, making use of the pure local water and the barley grown in the surrounding farmland. When the Royal Family visited, Begg reportedly invited them to tour the stillhouse and taste the whisky, a gesture that led to the coveted “Royal” prefix and enduring ties to the monarchy.
Royal Lochnagar is one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries, producing around 450,000 litres of spirit annually. Its compact size and traditional methods have remained largely unchanged for decades, giving the whisky a handcrafted quality that stands apart in an age of large-scale production. The distillery draws its water from the nearby Scarnock Springs and uses unpeated malted barley to produce a delicate yet flavoursome spirit.
The production process is intentionally slow and precise. Royal Lochnagar’s copper pot stills are relatively small and fitted with water-cooled worm tub condensers, a traditional cooling system that helps retain weight and body in the spirit. This combination of small stills and worm tubs results in a malt that balances elegance with a subtle, satisfying richness.
The core expression, Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old, is a perfect introduction to the distillery’s style: light yet structured, with notes of toffee, nuts, heather honey, and a touch of oak spice. It is matured primarily in American oak ex-bourbon casks, with a portion aged in European oak for added depth. Special releases, including limited-edition cask strength bottlings and older age statements, appear periodically, often as part of Diageo’s annual Special Releases collection.
Independent bottlings of Royal Lochnagar are relatively rare due to its small size and limited surplus stock, but those that do appear often showcase subtle variations on the house style, sometimes with richer sherry influence or heightened oak spice.
Flavour-wise, Royal Lochnagar tends to sit at the lighter end of the Highland spectrum. On the nose, expect aromas of fresh fruit, honey, and malty sweetness, with floral hints and a gentle nuttiness. The palate is smooth and rounded, offering toffee, hazelnut, and soft spice, supported by a touch of vanilla and citrus. The finish is clean and medium in length, with a lingering note of sweet malt and light oak.
Our Royal Lochnagar Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes the classic 12 Year Old and occasional rare bottlings, giving you the opportunity to experience one of Scotland’s most charming and historically significant distilleries. Whether you’re drawn to its royal heritage, its refined Highland character, or its rarity, Royal Lochnagar offers a dram that embodies tradition, elegance, and a direct link to whisky history.
