Rum

(6 products)

Rum is one of the world’s most diverse and historically significant spirits, with roots that trace back to the sugar-producing regions of the Caribbean and beyond. Distilled from sugarcane juice, syrup, or molasses, rum reflects the landscapes, cultures, and production traditions of the places where it’s made. From light, crisp white rums to rich, aged bottlings layered with spice and tropical fruit, the category offers a remarkable range of flavours and styles.

The history of rum is closely tied to the expansion of sugarcane cultivation during the colonial era. Sugar plantations across the Caribbean, Central and South America, and later in regions such as the Indian Ocean islands, produced molasses as a by-product. Distillation transformed this molasses into rum, creating a spirit that quickly gained popularity both locally and internationally. By the 17th century, rum was an important part of maritime trade and naval life, famously becoming the daily ration for British sailors until 1970.

Rum production begins with a sugarcane-derived base. In former French territories like Martinique and Guadeloupe, rhum agricole is made from fresh sugarcane juice, giving a grassy, vegetal profile. In Spanish-speaking regions such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Panama, producers often favour a lighter style distilled in column stills, producing elegant rums well-suited to cocktails. Former British colonies, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Guyana, are known for richer, more robust molasses-based rums, often distilled in traditional pot stills that preserve heavy, aromatic congeners.

Maturation plays a defining role in rum’s character. Tropical ageing in oak casks accelerates flavour development, producing deep colour and complexity in a shorter time than cooler climates. Casks may previously have held bourbon, sherry, or other wines and spirits, each influencing the final flavour profile. While some rums are bottled unaged for brightness and purity, others spend decades maturing, developing notes of toffee, dried fruit, spice, and oak.

Rum’s versatility has made it a cornerstone of classic cocktails. Light rums are the foundation of the Daiquiri and Mojito; aged and spiced rums shine in drinks like the Mai Tai or Dark ’n’ Stormy. Overproof rums, bottled at higher strengths, bring intensity to tiki cocktails and punches. Premium sipping rums, meanwhile, are enjoyed neat or over ice, where their complexity can be fully appreciated.

In recent years, rum has experienced a renaissance similar to that seen in whisky and gin. Enthusiasts are seeking out single-cask releases, unadulterated “pure” rums with no added sugar, and bottlings that highlight terroir, the idea that climate, soil, and local production choices influence flavour. Independent bottlers are also playing an important role, sourcing exceptional casks from distilleries around the world and releasing them in limited quantities.

Our rum collection spans this global diversity. You’ll find vibrant white and gold rums ideal for mixing, rich navy-strength bottlings, agricole styles with fresh cane character, and aged expressions from some of the world’s most respected producers. Whether you’re stocking up for cocktails, exploring regional styles, or adding a rare bottle to your collection, our selection is curated to offer quality, authenticity, and a true taste of rum’s rich heritage.
