J.J. Corry is Ireland’s leading modern whiskey bonder, reviving a historic tradition that almost disappeared during the 20th century. Founded in 2015 by Louise McGuane on the family farm in County Clare, the company takes its name from John James Corry, a 19th-century local merchant, publican, and bicycle-maker who also sourced and sold whiskey from his shop in the town of Kilrush. By naming the brand after him, McGuane pays tribute to a bygone era when independent bonders were central to Irish whiskey culture.

In the 1800s and early 1900s, most Irish distilleries sold their spirit wholesale to local grocers, pubs, and bonders, who would mature and blend it under their own labels. This system collapsed after the Irish whiskey industry’s decline in the mid-20th century, leaving distilleries to handle bottling themselves. McGuane set out to bring bonding back, sourcing new make and mature spirit from different distilleries, ageing it on-site in County Clare, and creating bespoke blends and single cask releases.

The J.J. Corry approach is highly curation-focused. McGuane works with distilleries across Ireland to select malt, grain, and pot still whiskey at different stages of maturity. These are then matched with casks sourced from around the world — including first-fill bourbon barrels from Kentucky, oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry butts from Spain, port pipes from Portugal, and custom-seasoned wine casks. The damp, temperate Atlantic climate of County Clare provides ideal maturation conditions, while the variety of cask types allows for a broad palette of flavours.

Flavour profiles in J.J. Corry bottlings reflect McGuane’s belief that blending is an art equal to distilling. The Gael, for example, balances the creamy vanilla of grain whiskey with the orchard fruit and spice of malt, while The Hanson offers vibrant lemon zest, green apple, and gentle sweetness. Higher-aged single casks can reveal tropical fruit, honey, and deep wood spice, while wine and sherry casks bring darker fruit and nutty depth.
