White Wine

White wine is one of the world’s most diverse and widely enjoyed wine styles, ranging from crisp and refreshing to rich and full-bodied. Made primarily from green-skinned grapes (though sometimes from red grapes with minimal skin contact), white wine offers an extraordinary spectrum of flavours influenced by grape variety, climate, winemaking techniques, and terroir. Production begins with careful harvesting, often in the cool of the early morning to preserve fresh fruit character. Fermentation can take place in stainless steel tanks for bright, pure fruit expression, or in oak barrels to add texture, spice, and complexity. Some wines also undergo malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and add creamy, buttery notes.

Climate plays a pivotal role in flavour. Cool-climate whites tend to be lighter, higher in acidity, and more citrus- or mineral-driven, while warm-climate whites often display riper fruit flavours such as peach, mango, and melon, with softer acidity.

Oak influence can dramatically alter style. Wines fermented or aged in oak barrels gain notes of vanilla, toast, and spice, along with a creamier texture. Conversely, unoaked whites retain a pure, fruit-forward freshness, ideal for highlighting varietal character.

In terms of food pairing, white wines are some of the most adaptable. Crisp Sauvignon Blancs and Albariños pair beautifully with seafood, salads, and light vegetarian dishes, while richer styles like barrel-aged Chardonnay or Viognier complement roast chicken, creamy pasta, and soft cheeses.
