The Singleton is a family of single malt Scotch whiskies produced by Diageo, each crafted at a different distillery but united by a shared aim, to offer approachable, smooth, and fruit-forward whiskies that appeal to both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts. The brand brings together three distinct distilleries, Dufftown, Glen Ord, and Glendullan, with each expression reflecting its own regional character while carrying The Singleton’s easy-drinking style.
The Concept Behind The Singleton
Launched in the early 2000s, The Singleton was created to simplify single malt whisky for a broader audience. Instead of focusing on just one distillery, Diageo positioned The Singleton as a trio of single malts, each tied to a specific market:
• The Singleton of Dufftown - primarily for the European market.
• The Singleton of Glendullan - mainly for North America.
• The Singleton of Glen Ord - focused on Asia and travel retail.
Despite different distillery origins, all share a common DNA: gentle spirit character, generous fruit notes, and well-judged oak influence.
Distillery Origins
• Dufftown Distillery (Speyside) - founded in 1896, known for nutty, malty, and orchard-fruit-led whiskies with a soft, mellow texture.
• Glen Ord Distillery (Highlands) - dating back to 1838, celebrated for waxy, rich malt with tropical fruit and spice.
• Glendullan Distillery (Speyside) - established in 1897, producing a grassy, floral spirit with fresh pear and apple notes.
Production and Style
Each Singleton distillery uses slightly different production techniques, but they all favour a long fermentation to encourage fruity esters and slow distillation for a silky mouthfeel. Maturation is predominantly in American oak ex-bourbon casks for vanilla sweetness and toffee depth, with selected European oak sherry casks adding dried fruit richness.
The result is a style that’s smooth, balanced, and versatile, equally enjoyable neat, with a splash of water, or in high-quality whisky cocktails.
Global Appeal
By presenting three distilleries under a single identity, The Singleton has gained strong brand recognition worldwide. It’s often recommended as a gateway single malt for those moving from blends to single malt, but it also offers depth for experienced drinkers, particularly in its older and limited releases.
Our Singleton selection includes expressions from Dufftown, Glen Ord, and Glendullan, from the fresh and fruity 12 Year Old to richly layered older bottlings. Whether you’re exploring single malt for the first time or adding an easy-going dram to your collection, The Singleton offers a smooth, flavourful journey into Scotland’s diverse whisky regions.
