The Concept Behind The Singleton
Launched in the early 2000s, The Singleton was created to simplify single malt whisky for a broader audience. Instead of focusing on just one distillery, Diageo positioned The Singleton as a trio of single malts, each tied to a specific market:
• The Singleton of Dufftown - primarily for the European market.
• The Singleton of Glendullan - mainly for North America.
• The Singleton of Glen Ord - focused on Asia and travel retail.
Despite different distillery origins, all share a common DNA: gentle spirit character, generous fruit notes, and well-judged oak influence.
Distillery Origins
• Dufftown Distillery (Speyside) - founded in 1896, known for nutty, malty, and orchard-fruit-led whiskies with a soft, mellow texture.
• Glen Ord Distillery (Highlands) - dating back to 1838, celebrated for waxy, rich malt with tropical fruit and spice.
• Glendullan Distillery (Speyside) - established in 1897, producing a grassy, floral spirit with fresh pear and apple notes.
Production and Style
Each Singleton distillery uses slightly different production techniques, but they all favour a long fermentation to encourage fruity esters and slow distillation for a silky mouthfeel. Maturation is predominantly in American oak ex-bourbon casks for vanilla sweetness and toffee depth, with selected European oak sherry casks adding dried fruit richness.
The result is a style that’s smooth, balanced, and versatile, equally enjoyable neat, with a splash of water, or in high-quality whisky cocktails.
