The life, love and flavour lessons from a whisky and sweets pairing

Kristiane Sherry |

From sparks-flying compatibility to meh-blandness, whisky- and food-pairing can be a lot like dating. This is what we discovered when we lined up our latest Vintage Reserve and Soho Selection whisky releases with a confectionery shop-load of chocolates and sweets. There were even some love lessons to be learned along the way.

If you’ve been on the apps in recent times, you’ll have a deep understanding of dating trial and error. However tasty a potential match looks on paper, you never know if it’ll work or not until you try it. We think whisky- and food-pairing is exactly the same. You need the IRL combination or you could miss out on a real gem.

Just like all good love stories, it started with a meet-cute. Team Milroy’s was tasting through our latest Soho Selection and Vintage Reserve bottlings, and our head of marketing Laura was enjoying an afternoon chocolate treat. And so an office-wide tasting commenced. Grace ran down to the local supermarket (Waitrose, if you were wondering) and came back with a haul. Drams were poured. Whiskies and sweets were pitted against each other. Would there be a compatible pairing? Would peat smoke work with chocolate, or is that best left to bourbon casks? We all gathered around the table. The emails and admin could wait. There was matchmaking to be done.
