Kingsbarns Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Kingsbarns is a young yet highly regarded Lowland single malt Scotch whisky distillery, founded with the aim of bringing a fresh, local voice to Scotland’s east coast whisky scene. Located just a few miles from the historic town of St Andrews in Fife, Kingsbarns produces a light, fruit-forward spirit that reflects both its Lowland heritage and its founders’ vision for approachable, high-quality whisky made with local ingredients.

The distillery was the brainchild of former golf caddie Douglas Clement, who saw the need for a local whisky destination to complement St Andrews’ tourism and golfing heritage. Backed by funding from the Wemyss family, already respected in the whisky industry through Wemyss Malts, Kingsbarns opened in 2014, transforming a 19th-century farm steading into a modern distillery while retaining its historic charm.

Production Philosophy

Kingsbarns is committed to crafting whisky from 100% locally grown Fife barley, ensuring a strong sense of place and traceability. The distillery’s water source is an aquifer deep beneath the site, providing pure, mineral-rich water ideal for mashing and distillation.

The stills, tall, elegant copper pot stills, are designed to create a light, clean, and fragrant spirit. Long fermentation times of up to 100 hours encourage fruity esters, resulting in a whisky with notes of orchard fruit, citrus, and delicate florals. Maturation predominantly takes place in first-fill bourbon casks, with some expressions incorporating sherry butts or wine casks for additional complexity.

Even in its youthful stages, Kingsbarns has impressed critics and whisky fans with the quality and balance of its spirit, a testament to careful production methods and thoughtful cask selection.

The Kingsbarns Distillery is open to the public, offering guided tours that highlight both the whisky-making process and the building’s history. With its café, shop, and proximity to the East Neuk of Fife’s scenic coastline, it’s become a popular stop for whisky tourists and golfers alike.
