Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected wine producers, renowned for its deep roots in the region, meticulous vineyard management, and elegant, terroir-driven wines. Founded in 1880 by the 22-year-old Joseph Drouhin in Beaune, the heart of Burgundy, the estate has remained family-owned for over four generations and is now led by Joseph’s great-grandchildren, Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe, and Laurent Drouhin.

From the beginning, Joseph Drouhin built the business on a commitment to quality and authenticity. Initially a négociant, sourcing and bottling wines from across Burgundy, the family gradually acquired prime vineyard holdings across the Côte d’Or, Chablis, Côte Chalonnaise, and Beaujolais. Today, the estate owns or manages over 80 hectares of vines, including prestigious Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites.

Vineyard Philosophy

Joseph Drouhin was an early adopter of sustainable and organic viticulture in Burgundy. Since the late 1980s, the estate has farmed its vineyards using organic and biodynamic methods, aiming to preserve biodiversity and allow each parcel’s unique terroir to express itself in the wine.

The vineyards are worked without synthetic chemicals, and yields are kept low to concentrate flavours. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, ensuring gentle handling of the grapes and careful selection in the vineyard.

Winemaking Style

The Drouhin style is defined by elegance, finesse, and purity of fruit rather than excessive oak or power. Grapes are vinified with minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of each appellation to shine. Fermentations use native yeasts, and ageing is carried out in French oak barrels, often with a restrained percentage of new oak to avoid overpowering the wine.

The family’s attention to detail extends to both red and white wines, from delicate, perfumed Pinot Noir to mineral-driven, precise Chardonnay.

They also bottle an Oregon range under the Domaine Drouhin Oregon label, bringing their Burgundian approach to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Dundee Hills AVA.
