Glenturret Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(0 products)Glenturret single malt Scotch whisky is often cited as Scotland’s oldest working distillery, with records of whisky production on the site dating back to 1763. Nestled in the Perthshire countryside near Crieff, Glenturret has built a reputation for small-scale, handcrafted whisky-making, staying true to traditional methods that many larger distilleries have long abandoned.
Originally known as Thurot Distillery, Glenturret operated illegally for a period before becoming licensed, like many 18th-century distilleries. Its remote location, surrounded by hills and farmland, made it ideal for discreet whisky production in its early days. Over the centuries, the distillery survived industry downturns, changes in ownership, and even closures, emerging in the 21st century as both a heritage attraction and a respected single malt producer.
One of Glenturret’s defining features is its commitment to manual, small-batch production. The distillery’s mash tun, washbacks, and stills are all operated by hand, and production is deliberately kept at a modest scale, among the lowest annual outputs in Scotland. This slower, more labour-intensive approach allows for precise control over each stage of the process, producing a rich, characterful spirit.
The stills at Glenturret are relatively small and squat, promoting heavier reflux and resulting in a robust, oily style of new make spirit. Long fermentation times add layers of fruit and floral character, while maturation often takes place in a mix of European oak sherry casks and American oak bourbon barrels.
For many years, Glenturret was perhaps better known as the spiritual home of The Famous Grouse, one of the world’s best-selling blended Scotch whiskies. Its visitor centre was a popular tourist attraction under the Edrington Group’s ownership. In 2019, the distillery entered a new era under the ownership of Lalique Group, which invested in elevating Glenturret’s profile as a premium single malt producer, working with renowned whisky maker Bob Dalgarno (formerly of Macallan) to refine the range.
Today, the Glenturret core range includes:
• Triple Wood - matured in a combination of American and European oak and refill casks, offering sweet fruit, vanilla, and gentle spice.
• 10 Year Old Peat Smoked - showcasing a softer, Highland style of peat alongside malt sweetness.
• 12 Year Old - sherry-led richness with notes of dried fruit, toffee, and oak spice.
• 15, 25, and 30 Year Old - ultra-premium expressions with depth, complexity, and long maturation elegance.
Limited editions, single cask bottlings, and Lalique crystal decanters further highlight Glenturret’s positioning as a luxury whisky brand, while retaining the charm and authenticity of its artisanal production methods.
Flavour-wise, Glenturret offers a versatile profile. Unpeated expressions are often rich and full-bodied, with honey, toffee, orchard fruit, and gentle spice. Peated variants bring in earthy smoke, balanced by sweet malt and citrus. The texture is typically oily and mouth-coating, with a long, warming finish.
Our Glenturret Single Malt Scotch Whisky range includes the core age-statement whiskies, limited editions, and rare older vintages that reflect the distillery’s unique blend of heritage and craftsmanship. Whether you’re drawn by its claim as Scotland’s oldest working distillery or its artisanal approach to whisky-making, Glenturret offers a dram steeped in history and flavour.
