Glenallachie single malt Scotch whisky is a Speyside distillery with a relatively short history by Scotch standards but a rapidly growing reputation for quality and innovation. Built in 1967 by Mackinlay, McPherson & Co., Glenallachie was designed during the post-war whisky boom to supply malt for blends, including Clan Campbell and White Heather. Tucked away in a quiet spot at the foot of Ben Rinnes, just outside Aberlour, the distillery has long been known to blenders for its reliable, fruity spirit — but in recent years it has stepped firmly into the spotlight as a single malt.

For most of its life, Glenallachie operated under large corporate ownership, passing through the hands of Invergordon, Campbell Distillers, and later Pernod Ricard. Its transformation began in 2017, when it was acquired by The GlenAllachie Consortium, led by master blender Billy Walker, renowned for revitalising BenRiach, GlenDronach, and Glenglassaugh. Under his stewardship, Glenallachie shifted focus from blending to crafting a diverse, characterful single malt range, with a strong emphasis on cask quality and small-batch production.

Glenallachie’s production process is geared towards producing a weighty, complex spirit with good ageing potential. Fermentation times are long, up to 160 hours, allowing for deep development of esters and fruity compounds. The distillery uses traditional wooden washbacks and onion-shaped copper stills to create a spirit that is rich yet approachable.

One of the defining aspects of the modern Glenallachie is its diverse cask programme. Billy Walker has expanded the use of high-quality casks far beyond the standard bourbon barrels, incorporating oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, virgin oak, red wine barriques, and exotic woods such as Chinquapin and Mizunara. This approach allows Glenallachie to produce whiskies with a broad spectrum of flavours, from honeyed orchard fruit to rich chocolate and spice.

The core range includes the Glenallachie 12 Year Old, a flagship release balancing honey, heather, butterscotch, and gentle spice; the 15 Year Old, richer and more sherried with layers of dried fruit and mocha; and older age statements such as the 18 and 21 Year Olds, which show the depth and complexity that extended maturation can bring. The distillery also produces limited “Wood Finish” editions and single cask releases, which highlight the influence of specific cask types on the house style.

Independent bottlings of Glenallachie, particularly from its pre-2017 era, tend to show a lighter, fruit-driven character, while the distillery’s own releases since the takeover have leaned into a richer, more full-bodied profile.

In terms of flavour, Glenallachie often offers aromas of honeycomb, toffee, and orchard fruit, layered with vanilla, baking spice, and occasionally chocolate or nutmeg from sherry casks. The palate is typically smooth and rounded, with a medium to full body and a finish that lingers with malt sweetness and gentle spice.

Our Glenallachie Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes the acclaimed core range, limited wood finishes, and rare single cask releases, offering something for both newcomers and experienced collectors. With its focus on quality casks, long fermentation, and traditional production, Glenallachie has emerged as one of Speyside’s most exciting modern distilleries — a name well worth knowing in today’s whisky world.
