Edradour Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(0 products)Edradour single malt Scotch whisky is often described as Scotland’s “little gem”, a distillery famed for its traditional, hands-on approach and picturesque setting in the Perthshire Highlands. Founded in 1825, Edradour was for many years celebrated as the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland, producing just a fraction of the output of larger sites. Nestled in a cluster of whitewashed farm buildings near the town of Pitlochry, it continues to be one of the most photogenic and visited whisky destinations in the country.
Edradour’s scale is part of its charm. Production takes place on a single pair of small copper pot stills, with wooden washbacks, open mashtuns, and manual processes that would be instantly recognisable to 19th-century distillers. This artisanal setup, combined with slow fermentation and distillation, results in a rich, oily spirit full of character, a world away from the lighter, more industrially produced malts of today.
The distillery’s core style is unpeated and often matured in a wide variety of cask types, giving Edradour an unusually broad flavour palette for its size. Traditional bourbon and sherry casks form the backbone, but the distillery is particularly renowned for its sherried whiskies, which are often deeply coloured and rich with flavours of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and spice. Under the ownership of independent bottler Signatory Vintage since 2002, Edradour has expanded its maturation experiments, using port pipes, Madeira casks, Sauternes, Burgundy wine barriques, and more to create unique limited editions.
In addition to its unpeated range, Edradour produces a peated style under the Ballechin name. Introduced in 2003, Ballechin showcases the same traditional production methods but with heavily peated malt, creating a smoky Highland whisky with layers of fruit and spice.
The core Edradour range includes:
• Edradour 10 Year Old - rich, full-bodied, and sherried, with notes of toffee, sultanas, and gentle spice.
• Edradour 12 Year Old Caledonia - a special collaboration with Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean, offering an intense sherried profile.
• A series of wine cask finishes and single cask bottlings, each highlighting a different maturation influence.
Independent bottlings of Edradour are relatively uncommon outside of Signatory’s own releases, as most of the production is bottled under the distillery’s own name. These single cask editions are typically non-chill-filtered, naturally coloured, and often released at cask strength, appealing to enthusiasts who want the whisky in its most natural form.
On the nose, Edradour’s unpeated style often offers rich fruitcake, almonds, and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and mouth-coating, with malt sweetness, dried fruits, spice, and a touch of nuttiness. The finish is long and warming, making it an ideal after-dinner dram. The peated Ballechin expressions, by contrast, add layers of earthy smoke, maritime hints, and peppery spice to this robust Highland base.
Our Edradour Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection features the rich sherried core range, innovative cask finishes, and peated Ballechin bottlings. Whether you’re seeking an indulgent, full-flavoured Highland malt, a smoky alternative, or a collectible single cask, Edradour delivers artisanal whisky with an authenticity that’s increasingly rare in today’s industry.
