Bunnahabhain Single Malt Scotch Whisky

(3 products)

Bunnahabhain single malt Scotch whisky is one of Islay’s most distinctive offerings, known not for intense peat smoke, but for a gentler, often unpeated style that emphasises maritime character, sherried richness, and complex layers of flavour. Founded in 1881 by the Islay Distillery Company, Bunnahabhain was built on the remote north-eastern coast of the island, overlooking the Sound of Islay. Its name comes from the Gaelic Bun na h-Abhainne, meaning “mouth of the river,” a reference to its location where the Margadale River meets the sea.

From its earliest days, Bunnahabhain stood apart from its Islay neighbours. While many island distilleries built their reputation on heavily peated malt, Bunnahabhain traditionally produced spirit with little or no peat, offering a lighter, fruitier style that appealed to blenders. Its spirit was a key component in high-end blends for much of the 20th century, but in recent decades the distillery has gained recognition for its single malts, many of which are now considered modern classics.

Bunnahabhain’s unpeated core style is shaped by several factors: unpeated malted barley, long fermentation times, and copper pot stills with upward-angled lyne arms that promote reflux and create a clean, fruity new make. However, in recent years the distillery has also embraced peated production for limited runs, resulting in smoky expressions like the Toiteach a Dhà, which add diversity to the range.

Maturation plays a major role in the distillery’s flavour profile. Bunnahabhain is renowned for its use of high-quality sherry casks, particularly oloroso butts, which impart rich notes of dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, and spice. Ex-bourbon casks and occasional experimental finishes in port, marsala, or wine casks add further complexity. The coastal warehouses, exposed to salt-laden air, infuse the whisky with a subtle briny edge that ties the flavour profile to its maritime surroundings.

The core range includes the approachable 12 Year Old, a flagship bottling that balances sweet sherry richness with fresh fruit, malt, and a whisper of sea spray. The 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old deepen the sherried complexity, while limited editions like the Moine (peated) and older vintage releases showcase the distillery’s versatility. Cask strength editions, including annual special releases, give enthusiasts the chance to experience Bunnahabhain in its most intense and unadulterated form.

Independent bottlings from Signatory Vintage, Hunter Laing, and others often feature single cask Bunnahabhain in both peated and unpeated styles, with some showcasing exceptional age, 30 years and beyond, demonstrating the spirit’s ability to mature gracefully over decades.

Bunnahabhain has a devoted following among whisky drinkers who appreciate its balance of richness, subtlety, and coastal character. It offers an alternative Islay experience for those who might shy away from heavy peat, yet still want a whisky with depth, history, and a strong sense of place.

Our Bunnahabhain Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection features the beloved core range, limited editions, and rare independent bottlings. Whether you prefer sherried elegance, gentle maritime charm, or the occasional smoky twist, Bunnahabhain delivers an Islay dram that is as distinctive as it is rewarding.
