Benrinnes Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(1 products)Benrinnes single malt Scotch whisky is a Speyside malt with a robust, meaty character, a style that sets it apart from the region’s typically lighter, fruit-forward drams. Situated at the foot of the Ben Rinnes mountain, the distillery takes its name from the imposing peak that dominates the landscape. Founded in 1826 by Peter McKenzie, Benrinnes has a history marked by resilience, having been rebuilt after severe flooding in 1829 and later modernised to keep pace with evolving whisky-making methods.
For much of its life, Benrinnes was one of the few Scotch distilleries to use a partial triple distillation process. This unique approach, in place until 2007, produced a heavier, oilier spirit with a rich, savoury depth, characteristics that made it highly prized by blenders for adding structure and body to their products. Today, although Benrinnes operates with a more conventional double distillation, its still design and production choices still yield a weighty spirit with notable texture.
Water is sourced from the Scurran and Rowantree Burns, both of which run off Ben Rinnes itself. This soft, clean water is combined with malted barley to create a wort that undergoes long fermentation, developing a complex array of fruity and malty flavours before distillation in the distillery’s six copper pot stills. Worm tub condensers, another traditional feature, contribute to the spirit’s muscular, slightly sulphury edge, enhancing its depth and mouthfeel.
Benrinnes’ style is well-suited to sherry cask maturation, and many of its best-loved bottlings feature a significant proportion of European oak influence. These casks add rich layers of dried fruit, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and warming spice to the underlying malt. Ex-bourbon barrels are also used, particularly in independent bottlings, bringing out lighter notes of vanilla, honey, and citrus.
While official bottlings are relatively rare, the Benrinnes 15 Year Old from Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range is widely respected as a benchmark example, showcasing the distillery’s robust, sherried style. Special releases through Diageo’s annual programme, often at higher strengths and in limited quantities, are highly sought after by collectors. Independent bottlers such as Signatory Vintage, Gordon & MacPhail, and Hunter Laing frequently release single cask Benrinnes, offering everything from younger, bourbon-matured expressions with bright fruit notes to older, sherried examples with deep, savoury richness.
On the nose, Benrinnes often reveals dried fruits, malty sweetness, and a faint earthy quality. The palate tends to be full-bodied, with flavours of fruitcake, toffee, and spice, balanced by a savoury backbone and a long, warming finish. This combination of richness and weight makes it an excellent whisky for pairing with strong cheeses, dark chocolate, or rich game dishes.
Our Benrinnes Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes the iconic Flora & Fauna 15 Year Old, limited official releases, and hand-picked independent bottlings. Whether you’re exploring Speyside’s less conventional side or seeking a whisky with depth, structure, and a bold personality, Benrinnes offers a rewarding departure from the region’s more delicate malts, a dram built on tradition, texture, and distinctive character.
