Ballindalloch Single Malt Scotch Whisky

(1 products)

Ballindalloch single malt Scotch whisky comes from one of Speyside’s most charming and authentically traditional distilleries, located on the Ballindalloch Estate in Banffshire. Established in 2014, Ballindalloch is unique among modern Scottish distilleries for its small-scale, manual approach, echoing the way whisky was made in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite its recent founding, it has quickly earned respect for the quality and character of its spirit, which reflects both Speyside elegance and meticulous craftsmanship.

The distillery is family-owned and operated by the Macpherson-Grant family, who have lived on the estate for over 500 years. Their vision was to create a “single estate” whisky, with every stage of production, from growing the barley to maturing the casks, carried out within the estate’s boundaries. This farm-to-bottle ethos is rare in Scotch whisky and ensures complete control over quality and provenance.

Barley for Ballindalloch’s whisky is grown in the estate’s fields and malted off-site to specification. The distillery’s water source is the nearby Ballindalloch Springs, providing soft, pure Highland water ideal for mashing and fermentation. Production capacity is deliberately kept low, at around 100,000 litres per year, allowing the team to focus on detail and consistency.

One of Ballindalloch’s defining features is its use of traditional wooden washbacks and a long fermentation time of up to 115 hours. This slow, patient approach allows the development of rich fruity esters in the wash, which translate into depth and complexity in the spirit. Distillation takes place in two small copper pot stills with relatively short, wide necks, producing a weighty new make spirit well-suited to long maturation.

Maturation takes place entirely on-site in traditional dunnage warehouses, where thick stone walls and earthen floors maintain a cool, stable environment. The spirit is filled into a combination of American oak ex-bourbon barrels for sweetness and vanilla, and European oak ex-sherry casks for dried fruit richness and spice.

Because the distillery is so young, most of Ballindalloch’s whisky to date has been released as limited editions, often as part of small cask batches or single cask bottlings. These early releases have been praised for their balance, texture, and promise, with tasters noting orchard fruit, honey, and malty sweetness alongside a rounded, creamy mouthfeel.

The flavour profile of Ballindalloch is firmly Speyside in style, with a soft, approachable nose of apple, pear, and vanilla cream. On the palate, gentle malt sweetness meets floral notes, citrus zest, and a touch of spice, while the finish is smooth and lingering, with hints of toffee and light oak. As older stock comes to market in the coming years, these characteristics are expected to deepen, with sherry cask expressions showing richer fruitcake, chocolate, and nutty tones.

Our Ballindalloch Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Scotland’s most hands-on and personal distilleries at the start of its journey. Whether you’re a collector seeking limited early bottlings or a drinker who values provenance and craftsmanship, Ballindalloch delivers a whisky made with patience, passion, and an unbroken link to the land from which it comes.
