A journey through time: The history of Ballantine’s  

The Ballantine’s story begins in 1827, when George Ballantine opened a grocery store in Edinburgh, Scotland. Selling a range of whiskies and spirits, George’s entrepreneurial character soon led him to experiment with his own blends. He had a keen eye for business. It wasn’t long before he opened a second store in Glasgow in 1865 – a move that proved pivotal to the brand’s success. While his son Archibald managed the original Edinburgh store, George’s new Glasgow location became a hub for whisky blending. It was from here that Ballantine’s bespoke blends gained popularity. 

Business was soon booming, and George’s other son, George Jr., joined the enterprise. This partnership gave rise to George Ballantine and Son Ltd. By the time it was acquired by Barclay and McKinlay in 1919, Ballantine’s was already a force to be reckoned with. The next chapter of growth came in 1937. Canadian whisky giant Hiram Walker Gooderham & Worts became the majority shareholder, welcoming in a new era of expansion. The company then purchased the Glenburgie and Miltonduff distilleries to secure a stable supply of malt whisky. A state-of-the-art grain distillery in Dumbarton was also constructed to support the production of Ballantine’s blends. 

By 1986, Ballantine’s had become the largest blended Scotch whisky in Europe. Today, its flagship blend, Ballantine’s Finest, accounts for a staggering 89% of its global sales, with around 5.3 million cases sold annually. 

The craft behind the cask: How Ballantine’s whisky is made
