An expression of Kentucky's whiskey heritage

When it comes to premium American whiskey, few names carry the weight and heritage of 1792 Bourbon. Rooted in Kentucky’s storied whiskey tradition, the brand has carved out a place for itself among the upper echelon of small-batch bourbons. Its rich backstory and corn-forward flavour profile celebrates the state’s spirit, and appeals to both established and new whiskey drinkers alike

The history of 1792 Bourbon

Perhaps unsurprisingly, 1792 Bourbon takes its name from the year Kentucky gained its statehood. It was actually launched in 2002 by the Barton 1792 distillery, initially under the ‘Ridgewood Reserve 1792’ name. A 2004 trademark dispute with Jack Daniel’s parent Brown-Forman prompted the name change A federal judge ruled that the brand was too similar to ‘Woodford Reserve’. And so the 1792 Bourbon name was born. Since 2009, the brand and the Barton distillery have been owned by Sazerac, which also makes Buffalo Trace and many other bourbons

How Bourbon is made

While every bourbon is different, they are broadly aligned when it comes to production processes. Bourbon can be made anywhere in the US, but the distilling epicentre is undoubtedly Kentucky. And one town wears the crown as the bourbon capital: Bardstown. This is where the Barton 1792 Distillery is found.

All Bourbons must be made from a minimum of 51% corn. The grain make-up in an American whiskey is commonly known as its mash bill – the recipe that imparts so much flavour. For 1792 Straight Bourbon, this is thought to be 75% corn, 15% rye, and 10% malted barley.

While 1792 uses the term ‘small batch’ on its labels, this has no legal definition. What is an important term, however, is ‘straight bourbon’. If a bottle carries this label, it means it has been aged for a minimum of two years in oak. If no number is disclosed, as is the case with 1792, this means the whiskey has been aged for a minimum of four years.

What makes 1792 Bourbon unique?

1792 Bourbon stands apart for a number of reasons:

- Its Kentucky heritage. Not only is the whiskey made in the Bourbon capital of the world, it also references the state’s history in its name.

- Bold proof and flavour: Bottled at 93.7 proof (46.8% ABV), 1792 Bourbon delivers a powerful flavour that’s rich and full-bodied. This proof level is ideal for bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate complexity and depth.

- Its mash bill contains a comparatively high proportion of corn, giving it a smooth, mellow mouthfeel.

Tasting notes and the drinking experience

1792 Bourbon is a whiskey to savour. Here’s what you can expect when you enjoy a glass.

- Appearance: Deep amber, glowing with warm, inviting hues
