Foursquare is one of the most respected names in the world of rum, renowned for its uncompromising approach to quality, innovation, and transparency. Produced in Barbados, often referred to as the birthplace of rum, Foursquare is a family-owned distillery operated by the Seale family, with Richard Seale as Master Distiller and Master Blender. Under his stewardship, Foursquare has become a benchmark for authentic Caribbean rum, winning numerous awards and earning a global following among both casual drinkers and serious collectors.
The distillery is located on the site of a former sugar plantation dating back to 1636, in the parish of St. Philip. While Foursquare as a distillery was established in 1996, the Seale family’s rum-making heritage stretches back to 1820 through their merchant company, R.L. Seale & Co.
Production Philosophy
Foursquare is a vocal champion of pure, unadulterated rum. All expressions are free from added sugar, flavouring, or artificial colouring, a rarity in an industry where such practices are common. Every release is crafted from molasses derived from Barbadian sugarcane and distilled on-site using both a traditional copper pot still and a modern column still. These two distillate styles are carefully blended to achieve balance and complexity.
Maturation takes place entirely in Barbados, where the warm tropical climate accelerates interaction between spirit and cask. This tropical ageing produces intense, concentrated flavour in a fraction of the time it would take in cooler climates, though it also results in a higher “angel’s share” evaporation.
Cask Management and Innovation
Foursquare is known for its meticulous cask management and creative use of different oak types. The core range focuses on ex-bourbon American oak barrels, but limited editions often explore secondary maturation or finishing in casks that previously held sherry, port, madeira, or other fortified wines.
The distillery releases two main types of bottlings:
• Exceptional Cask Series - small-batch, often cask strength, showcasing innovative maturations and blends.
• Vintage and Limited Editions - one-off bottlings highlighting specific casks or years, highly sought after by collectors.
