MARS The Y.A. #1 52% ABV

An unusual Japanese blended malt from two Hombo Shuzo distilleries – Shinshu, situated in the Japanese Alps, and Tsunuki, located on Kagoshima island. Made from both peated and unpeated barley, there’s a subtle smoke that doesn’t overwhelm, in with a beautifully fruity profile. Interestingly it’s been matured at one of Mars’s ageing cellars on a sub-tropical island. The #1 implies it’s the first in a series – it’s an impressive expression, and we’re intrigued to see where the line-up goes next.

Tasting note:

Nose: Light and fresh, with an array of tropical fruits, gentle vanilla, dusty cinnamon, and a whisper of smoke.

Palate: A bourbon-like caramel and ice-cream wafer quality comes through, followed by almonds, sweet spices, and more of that smoke.

Finish: Gently warming with more sweet spices.
