Lochlea Ploughing Edition 46% ABV

The winter expression and the fourth in the distillery’s seasonal releases, Lochlea Ploughing Edition (First Crop) is a flavoursome bottling indeed. The first smoky Scotch from the producer, it gets the character not from peating the malt, but from a clever use of oak. Matured in a combination of peated quarter casks and ex-Islay barrels, it’s a lesson in how ageing impacts flavour. And it’s fascinating! Ploughing Edition also celebrates winter, when the fields are ploughed ahead of the next barley-growing season.

Nose: Bursting with orchard fruit and sweet pastry notes, as well as a dusting of cinnamon, to complement a gentle earthy smoke.

Palate: The smoke is more pronounced here – it becomes more bonfire-like, alongside stewed apple and a crunchy barley quality.

Finish: Medium to long, turning more pear-like, and just a whisper of smoke.
