Chain Pier 6 Year Old Tri Carragh 58.9% 70cl
A fascinating Chain Pier release, chosen by independent bottler Tri Carragh. Now closed, Chain Pier was an experimental maker based in Edinburgh – and its whiskies are overflowing with flavour. Distilled in 2019, this expression was initially aged in a PX hogshead, before enjoying a powerful seven-month finish in a second-fill red wine octave. There’s simply nothing else like this – and with just 86 bottles released, it’s one to snap up fast.
Official tasting notes:
Nose: Red berries, baked apples and blackcurrant cordial sit alongside vanilla cream and soft oak. A savoury complexity emerges with hints of freshly baked sourdough, proving dough and toasted malt.
Palate: Layers of red fruits and sweet spice develop into notes of Welsh rarebit, Worcestershire sauce and pickled jalapeño. The spirit displays a fascinating balance between sweetness and savoury depth, with creamy vanilla and subtle oak supporting throughout.
Finish: Long and evolving with dark fruits, mature cheese, gentle spice and lingering savoury notes reminiscent of Shropshire Blue on digestive biscuits.
