Founded in 1765 by Irishman Richard Hennessy in the Charente region of France, the maison has grown into the largest Cognac producer in the world, accounting for nearly half of all Cognac sales globally. Richard Hennessy, a former officer in the French army, established the house with a vision to produce fine eaux-de-vie for discerning drinkers. The business has remained in family hands for generations and today is part of the LVMH luxury group, continuing its tradition while embracing modern innovation.

The Art of Cognac Making

Hennessy’s Cognacs are crafted from Ugni Blanc grapes, grown in the six crus of the Cognac region, with a particular emphasis on the prestigious Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne areas for their finesse and ageing potential.

The production process includes:
1. Distillation - conducted in traditional copper pot stills, with each eau-de-vie double distilled for purity and complexity.
2. Ageing - in French oak barrels, many of which are crafted in Hennessy’s own cooperage, imparting subtle vanilla, spice, and tannic structure.
3. Blending - overseen by the Fillioux family of Master Blenders, a lineage that has served Hennessy for over eight generations. The house maintains a library of more than 350,000 casks of ageing eaux-de-vie, allowing for unmatched blending precision.
