Fernet-Branca is one of the world’s most famous amari (Italian herbal liqueurs), renowned for its bold, bitter flavour and complex botanical recipe. First produced in 1845 in Milan by Bernardino Branca, the liqueur quickly became a cornerstone of Italian drinking culture, celebrated for its supposed medicinal qualities and distinctive taste. Today, Fernet-Branca remains family-owned, produced by the Branca distillery, and enjoyed in over 160 countries.

The recipe for Fernet-Branca is a closely guarded secret, known to only a handful of people within the company. It’s believed to contain around 27 herbs, roots, and spices sourced from across the globe. Confirmed ingredients include saffron from Iran, gentian from France, chamomile from Italy and Argentina, aloe ferox from South Africa, myrrh from Africa and the Middle East, and galangal from China. This global sourcing reflects the liqueur’s 19th-century origins, when exotic ingredients were a sign of both quality and sophistication.

The production process begins with macerating the botanicals in a neutral alcohol base to extract their essential flavours and aromas. Some ingredients are infused separately to preserve their individual character before blending. The resulting liquid is aged for at least 12 months in large Slovenian oak casks, allowing the flavours to integrate and mellow while retaining the liqueur’s intense bitterness and aromatic complexity.

Fernet-Branca is bottled at 39% ABV, making it more potent than many other amari, and it is known for its uncompromising flavour profile.

Traditionally, Fernet-Branca has been consumed as a digestif, sipped neat after a meal to aid digestion. Its bold bitterness also makes it popular in the hospitality industry, bartenders around the world often toast with a quick shot of “Fernet” at the end of a shift, particularly in the United States and Argentina. In fact, Argentina is the largest consumer of Fernet-Branca outside Italy, where it’s famously mixed with Coca-Cola as a long drink.

The Branca brand has expanded over the years to include Branca Menta, a sweeter, mint-forward variant launched in the 1960s, and other liqueurs like Caffè Borghetti coffee liqueur. However, Fernet-Branca itself remains the flagship, a drink that inspires devotion among its fans and curiosity from newcomers.

Our Fernet-Branca selection features the classic expression alongside Branca Menta for those who prefer a gentler, fresher take on the style. Whether enjoyed neat, on ice, or in cocktails, Fernet-Branca delivers an unapologetically bold taste of Italian tradition, unchanged for nearly 180 years.
