Brugal is one of the most prominent names in Dominican rum, with over 135 years of heritage and a reputation for producing clean, dry, and versatile rums that reflect the Caribbean island’s unique climate and culture. Founded in 1888 by Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spanish emigrant who brought his distilling knowledge from Cuba to the Dominican Republic, Brugal has grown from a family-run operation into an internationally recognised brand, while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.

The distillery is based in Puerto Plata, on the island’s north coast, where the trade winds and tropical climate create ideal conditions for both distillation and maturation. Today, Brugal remains in the hands of the fifth generation of the Brugal family, ensuring continuity of style and values.

One of Brugal’s defining characteristics is its dry style. Unlike many Caribbean rums that emphasise heavy sweetness, Brugal rums are carefully distilled to remove most of the heavier molasses notes, producing a lighter, cleaner spirit. This is achieved through a combination of continuous column stills and precise distillation cuts, overseen by the brand’s long line of maestros roneros (master rum makers).

Maturation plays a central role in shaping Brugal’s flavour. All ageing takes place in the Dominican Republic’s hot, humid climate, which accelerates the interaction between rum and oak, leading to faster development of colour and complexity. The distillery primarily uses American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, which contribute notes of vanilla, coconut, and subtle spice. In recent years, Brugal has also experimented with European oak and sherry-seasoned casks to add richer layers of flavour.

In flavour terms, Brugal is known for being smooth, balanced, and not overly sweet. The nose often reveals light oak, vanilla, and tropical fruit, while the palate delivers caramel, toffee, gentle spice, and a clean, dry finish. This dryness makes Brugal exceptionally versatile, equally enjoyable neat, on the rocks, or as the base for premium cocktails such as the Old Cuban, Rum Old Fashioned, or classic Daiquiri.
