Beefeater is one of the most iconic names in the world of gin, a true London original that has been produced in the city since the 19th century. Founded in 1863 by pharmacist and entrepreneur James Burrough, Beefeater has remained a benchmark for the classic London Dry style for over 160 years. Today, it is the only major international gin brand still distilled in London, proudly made at the historic Kennington distillery.

A London Legacy

James Burrough purchased the Chelsea Distillery in 1863 and began producing his own gin recipes, perfecting a balanced and juniper-forward style that would become Beefeater’s hallmark. The name Beefeater comes from the ceremonial Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London, a nod to both the gin’s capital city heritage and its role as a guardian of traditional distillation methods.

The distillery has moved locations over the decades, but its commitment to London-based production has never wavered. Since 1958, Beefeater has operated from Kennington, where it continues to produce millions of bottles each year using much the same process James Burrough pioneered.

The Distillation Process

Beefeater is crafted using 100% grain spirit and a carefully selected blend of nine botanicals: juniper, angelica root, angelica seed, coriander seed, liquorice root, almonds, orris root, Seville orange peel, and lemon peel. The botanicals are steeped in neutral spirit for 24 hours before distillation in traditional copper pot stills, allowing the flavours to fully integrate.

This method creates a gin with a bold juniper backbone, bright citrus, and earthy, herbal complexity, the very definition of a London Dry gin.

Beefeater is one of the most awarded gins in the world, regularly earning gold medals at major spirits competitions. Its reputation for quality has helped it remain a staple behind bars globally, from high-end cocktail lounges to home mixology setups.
