Angostura is a name that resonates in two worlds, as the creator of the world-famous aromatic bitters and as one of the Caribbean’s leading rum producers. Based in Trinidad and Tobago, Angostura has been making spirits since the 19th century, with a portfolio that ranges from versatile white rums to long-aged sipping expressions. Known for its tropical depth, smooth character, and consistent quality, Angostura rum reflects both its island origins and a long tradition of craftsmanship.

From Bitters to Rum

The company’s story begins in 1824, when Dr Johann Siegert, a German surgeon in the Venezuelan military, created his aromatic bitters as a medicinal tonic in the town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar). Over time, these bitters became an indispensable cocktail ingredient worldwide.

By the late 19th century, the Siegert family relocated to Trinidad, where the company expanded into rum production. By 1945, Angostura had acquired the Trinidad Distillers Limited facility, marking the start of large-scale rum-making alongside its bitters business.

Distillation and Style

Angostura produces rum using molasses sourced primarily from Caribbean sugar producers. The distillation takes place in multi-column stills, which produce a clean, consistent spirit. Maturation occurs in American oak ex-bourbon barrels under tropical conditions, a process that accelerates flavour development and concentrates the spirit’s character.

The house style is known for its smoothness, balanced sweetness, and subtle spice, a profile that works beautifully both in cocktails and for sipping.
