Eagle Rare

Eagle Rare is one of those bourbons people keep coming back to. It’s not loud. It doesn’t try too hard. It just does what it should.

It’s made at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. It’s a classic setting in a classic style. Warm, steady, easy to sit with. And for a ten year bourbon, it still feels like good value. That’s not as common as it used to be.

A bit of history

Eagle Rare first showed up in 1975 under Seagram’s, with early production linked to Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Things shifted in 1989 when the Sazerac Company took over and moved it to Buffalo Trace.

Since then, a few people have shaped it. Today it sits under the charge of Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. But the style goes back further. Elmer T. Lee played a big part in setting the direction early on.

How Eagle Rare is made

Eagle Rare uses Buffalo Trace’s Mash Bill #1.That’s the low-rye recipe. In simple terms, it leans sweeter rather than spicy. There’s more  caramel and oak with less of a sharp edge. It’s aged for ten years and bottled at 45% ABV, or 90 proof. That gives it enough weight to carry flavour, but it’s still easy to drink.

Tasting notes

This is where it settles in nicely.

You’ll find:

- Toffee and caramel up front
- A bit of orange peel or darker fruit
- Gentle oak, nothing too heavy
- A smooth, slightly dry finish

Nothing jumps out too hard. It stays balanced.

Try it neat first. Then maybe add a drop of water and see what shifts.

Why people keep buying it

Eagle Rare has picked up plenty of awards, including strong results at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. But that’s not really why people reach for it.

It’s a bourbon that fits anywhere. Easygoing enough for a casual pour, yet still interesting if you want to slow down with it.And a solid ten year age statement still means something.

Availability and special releases

Most of the time, you’ll see the standard Eagle Rare 10 Year Old

Every now and then:

- Single barrel store picks show up
- And if you’re lucky, Eagle Rare seventeen year appears as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection

Those bottles don’t hang around long. If you’re building out a bourbon shelf, this is an easy choice.

Not complicated. Not overhyped. Just a well-made Kentucky straight bourbon that delivers every time.
