Caperdonich Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Caperdonich is one of Speyside’s most intriguing “lost distilleries”, a producer whose whisky has become increasingly rare and collectible since its closure in 2002. Situated in Rothes, Scotland, the distillery was originally founded in 1898 under the name Glen Grant No. 2 as a sister site to the well-established Glen Grant Distillery. Its story is one of intermittent operation, limited production, and an enduring reputation for high-quality spirit.

The distillery’s original run was short-lived; it closed just four years after opening during the economic downturn of the early 1900s. It remained silent for decades until 1965, when it was rebuilt and reopened under the name Caperdonich, Gaelic for “secret well” or “black well,” referencing the water source used in production.

Caperdonich’s stills were exact replicas of Glen Grant’s, and for many years much of its output was used in blends for brands like Chivas Regal and Passport. However, the whisky had a character all its own: lighter and fruitier than Glen Grant, with a subtle floral elegance and creamy texture that appealed to blenders and, later, independent bottlers.

The distillery operated for less than four decades in its second life. In 2002, Pernod Ricard closed Caperdonich as part of a wider rationalisation, and in 2010 the buildings were demolished, making any existing stock truly finite. As a result, every remaining cask has become a piece of whisky history, highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.

Caperdonich spirit was distilled in traditional copper pot stills, using lightly peated malt in its early years and primarily unpeated malt in later years. Maturation was typically in ex-bourbon barrels and sherry butts, though independent bottlers have occasionally released examples from more unusual casks such as port or wine finishes.

Flavour-wise, Caperdonich is known for its fruity, honeyed, and floral character. Many bottlings display notes of ripe apple, pear, and white peach, underpinned by vanilla cream, soft malt, and gentle spice. Older expressions often develop waxy, tropical, and herbal notes with age, along with a long, elegant finish.

Today, official bottlings are scarce, Chivas Brothers has occasionally released limited editions under The Secret Speyside Collection, including both unpeated and rare peated Caperdonich. Independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage, and Duncan Taylor have also offered single cask releases, often at cask strength, which showcase the distillery’s nuanced complexity.

Caperdonich’s appeal lies not only in its quality but in its rarity. With no prospect of the distillery ever reopening, every bottle represents a dwindling slice of Speyside’s history. For collectors, it’s a chance to own and enjoy a malt that will never be made again; for drinkers, it’s an opportunity to explore a style of whisky that bridges the floral elegance of classic Speyside with a richness and depth that matures beautifully in oak.

Our Caperdonich selection focuses on these rare and precious releases, from youthful, vibrant cask expressions to gracefully aged single malts over 30 years old. Whether you’re seeking a unique addition to your collection or a dram to savour on a special occasion, Caperdonich offers a taste of Speyside’s past, elegant, elusive, and unforgettable.
