Scotland’s hidden gem in the heart of Speyside

When it comes to Scotland’s whisky scene, names like Glenlivet and The Macallan often dominate the conversation. Yet, nestled in the heart of Speysideoften considered the epicentre of Scotch whiskythere’s a lesser-known but equally remarkable distillery that deserves its moment in the spotlight: Braeval. Sometimes known as Braes of Glenlivet, Braeval is one of Scotland’s highest distilleries. It makes use of innovative, modern production methods while staying true to tradition, offering a unique perspective on whisky-making.

legacy built in the Livet Glen

Founded in 1973 by the Chivas and Glenlivet Group, Braeval’s story is one of quiet determination and adaptability. Situated in the lush pastures of Livet Glena prime whisky-producing region in Speysideit originally bore the name Braes of Glenlivet, aligning itself with the iconic Glenlivet brand. However, to carve out its own identity and avoid confusion, the distillery dropped the "Glenlivet" suffix in 1994, emerging as Braeval.

The 1970s marked a period of rapid expansion for Braeval. Starting with modest production capabilities, the distillery grew significantly, adding a final pot still in 1978 to bring its total to six. By the end of the decade, Braeval had established itself as a serious player in whisky, standing ready to meet the growing global demand for Scotch.

However, like many distilleries, Braeval faced challenges. Following Pernod Ricard’s acquisition of Chivas Brothers in 2001, Braeval’s operations were temporarily halted in October 2002. It would remain silent for nearly six years until a resurgence in whisky demand prompted its grand reopening in July 2008. This revitalisation was part of a broader strategy by parent company Chivas Bros to breathe life back into its silent distilleries. Braeval was once again ready to make its mark.

Whisky production: Tradition meets technology

While many Scottish distilleries lean into their history, Braeval blends traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge production techniques. Despite its classic, old-world aesthetic, Braeval’s production process is thoroughly modern. Astonishingly, the distillery can be operated by just one person. This streamlined efficiency reflects a blend of automation and human oversight, a hallmark of contemporary whisky production.

Production process at a glance

1. Pot stills: The distillery is home to six copper pot stills – kettle-like vessels that boil a beer-like ‘wash’ to transform it into ‘new make spirit’. Once mature, this becomes whisky.

2. Annual capacity: Braeval is a medium-sized distillery with an annual production capacity of 3.8 million litres.

3. Water source: Braeval’s water, a fundamental ingredient in whisky production, is sourced from the Pitilie Burn. Surprisingly, it is shared with the Highland-based Aberfeldy distillery.

Braeval’s use of cutting-edge technology paired with traditional methods gives it a modern edge while maintaining the integrity of Speyside’s whisky heritage. The ability to operate the entire facility with a single person on-site highlights its impressive level of efficiency.

What Makes Braeval Unique?

Several features make Braeval a standout distillery within the crowded whisky landscape. From its location to its production techniques, here’s what makes Braeval unique:

- One-person operation: While most distilleries require a small team to manage daily production, Braeval’s operational efficiency allows it to function with minimal human intervention. This one-person operation model showcases the power of modern technology paired with traditional craftsmanship.

- Pitilie Burn water source: The distillery shares its water source with the Aberfeldy distillery, known for producing some of the most celebrated single malts.

- Silent, but essential: While Braeval isn’t known for its single malt releases, its production supports the creation of some of the most beloved blended whiskies in the world. As a silent partner, its spirit forms the backbone of several key blends.

The Whiskies of Braeval

Despite its production capacity, Braeval’s single malts are a rarity. The distillery’s output is primarily used in blended whiskies, and official Braeval-branded releases are scarce. However, whisky aficionados can still savour the distillery’s craftsmanship through independently bottled releases. One example is Aberko's Deerstalker range, which occasionally features Braeval whiskies. While these expressions remain relatively obscure, they offer a rare glimpse into the heart and soul of Braeval’s production.

Some of these rarer releases have become collectors items for whisky enthusiasts. They provide a sensory journey into one of Speyside’s most secluded distilleries. While Braeval may not enjoy the same brand recognition as The Glenlivet, its whiskies embody a craftsmanship that is unmistakable.

The future of Braeval

Having survived closure, rebranding, and ownership changes, Braeval’s future looks bright. Its modernised facilities, impressive production capacity, and high-altitude maturation make it a unique player in Scotland’s whisky industry. While it remains a silent partner in many blended whiskies, those lucky enough to taste a Braeval single malt know they’ve encountered something rare and special.

Chivas’s strategy to reactivate its silent distilleries has played a significant role in Braeval's continued success. Its ability to function as a one-person operation gives it a competitive edge, allowing it to increase production with minimal staffing requirements.

With blended whisky popularity on the rise, Braeval is poised to remain an essential component in these blends. However, whisky enthusiasts hold out hope for more single malt releases that showcase the distillery’s distinctive flavour profile.

Why Braeval deserves a place in your whisky collection

If you’re a whisky enthusiast seeking to explore the hidden gems of Speyside, Braeval is a must-know name. Despite its relatively low profile, the distillery's impact on blended whisky production is monumental. For collectors, Braeval’s whiskies are considered hidden treasures. Given the distillery’s operational efficiency, the whisky produced at Braeval offers a unique flavour profile that few others can match.
