Discovering Ardnahoe: Islay’s latest whisky maker

Perched on the rugged northeast coast of Islay, between the celebrated Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain distilleries, lies a new gem in the world of Scotch whisky: Ardnahoe Distillery. As Islay’s ninth distillery and the latest to start production, Ardnahoe has quickly captured the hearts of whisky enthusiasts with its elegant approach to production, scenic location, and dedication to tradition.

journey through time: The history of Ardnahoe

The story of Ardnahoe Distillery began in January 2016, when plans for its construction were submitted to the Argyll and Bute Council. Backed by a £12 million investment from family-owned business Hunter Laing, the vision for a new Islay distillery took shape. By October 2017, construction was well underway, with the foundations laid for what would become a landmark addition to Islay’s whisky heritage.

In April 2019, Ardnahoe opened its doors, marking the first new whisky distillery on Islay in almost 15 years. The grand opening was officiated by Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, further cementing its place in the island’s whisky tradition. Ardnahoe’s early success was cemented by the 24,000 visitors it welcomed within its first year, and it earned a prestigious five-star grading from VisitScotland.

Another milestone moment arrived in the summer of 2024, when Ardnahoe released its first whisky. The Inaugural Release is a 5-year-old single malt matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. This release marked a triumphant new chapter for the distillery and offered whisky lovers their first taste of Ardnahoe’s distinctive craftsmanship.

Crafting excellence: The production process at Ardnahoe

At Ardnahoe, whisky production is a fascinating blend of tradition and precision. One of the stand-out features of the distillery is its worm tub condensers. It’s the only maker on Islay to use them. Worm tubs create a heavier, richer spirit with a distinctive mouthfeel, adding depth to the final product.

The distillation process is carried out in two lantern-shaped copper pot stills, a 13,000-litre wash still and an 11,000-litre spirit still. Another of the distillery’s claims to fame includes the dimensions of its lyne arms – they are the longest in Scotland. This influences the whisky’s character by increasing reflux and promoting lighter, more refined flavours.

Fermentation takes place in traditional Oregon pine washbacks. There's a notably long fermentation time of around 72 hours. This extended process allows for the development of fruity, complex flavours. The malt used at Ardnahoe is peated to approximately 40 parts per million (ppm), lending a smoky character to the spirit. After distillation, the new make spirit is filled predominantly into ex-Bourbon casks, with around 25% matured in Oloroso sherry oak, ensuring a balance of sweet, nutty, and smoky notes.

What makes Ardnahoe unique?

While its production techniques set it apart, Ardnahoe’s location is just as pivotal. The distillery sits between Loch Ardnahoe and the Sound of Islay, offering breathtaking views of the Paps of Jura. This scenic setting enhances the visitor experience and adds to the allure of the whisky’s terroir a term often associated with wine, but equally relevant in whisky. The name Ardnahoe’ means height of the hollowin Gaelic, and reflects the distillery’s deep connection to its environment.

Another defining feature is its commitment to preserving traditional methods. The use of worm tubs, Oregon pine fermenters, and the longest lyne arm in Scotland underscores a respect for heritage while maintaining a forward-thinking approach to whisky production.

 Whisky offerings: Ardnahoe’s product range

The flagship release from the distillery is Ardnahoe Inaugural Release, a 5-year-old single malt whisky that embodies everything the distillery stands for. Matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks, this whisky captures a balance of sweet vanilla, dried fruit, and gentle smoke. The peating level of 40 ppm offers a smoky backdrop that whisky aficionados will recognise as quintessentially Islay, but with Ardnahoe’s own signature twist.

While the Inaugural Release serves as the introduction to Ardnahoe’s style, the future promises more exciting expressions as the distillery’s casks continue to mature. Whisky enthusiasts can look forward to a diverse range of releases as older vintages are bottled in the coming years.
