An exciting release for fans of Islay distillery Bunnahabhain – the inaugural edition of the annual 21 Year Old Cask Strength is here! The 2024 expression kicks off the series by making use of just 21 casks. The spirit spent most of its life maturing in Oloroso butts, before being transferred to Pedro Ximénez barrels for – you guessed it – a 21-month finish. The result is remarkably rambunctious, with big bold fruity notes sitting alongside roasted nuts amid a syrupy texture, all with a smattering of sea spray. Only 2,682 bottles have been released at a cask-strength of 53.6% ABV.
Tasting notes from Bunnahabhain:
Nose: Sweet nose with notes of dried fruit, nutmeg spice, honey, caramelised walnuts and a gentle touch of oak
Palate: Initial spicy notes of cinnamon and clove fade to reveal grape syrup which coats the palate, with raisins, figs, candied cherries and a hint of liquor ice
Finish: Lingering spicy finish of toasted coffee and cocoa
