A House with 19th-Century Roots

The original Sazerac de Forge & Fils was founded in Cognac during the 1800s, operating at a time when the region’s vineyards were planted with a diversity of grape varieties beyond today’s dominant Ugni Blanc. These grapes — Folle Blanche, Colombard, Montils, and others, contributed distinctive flavours to the eaux-de-vie.

Like much of Cognac, the house was devastated by the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century, which destroyed most vineyards and led to a shift toward more disease-resistant varieties. The brand eventually disappeared, but its name and reputation endured in historical records.

The Revival

The Sazerac Company, an American family-owned spirits producer with roots going back to New Orleans in the 1800s, purchased the rights to the name and relaunched Sazerac de Forge & Fils in the 21st century. The goal was to recreate the character of 19th-century Cognac by sourcing eaux-de-vie not only from Ugni Blanc but from a wide range of traditional grapes.

This approach brings unique depth, aromatic complexity, and texture to the Cognac — a profile rarely encountered in modern blends.

Production and Style

Sazerac de Forge & Fils works with small, family-owned vineyards and distillers across the Cognac region. The production process follows classic Cognac methods:
• Double distillation in copper pot stills.
• Ageing in French oak barrels, with a careful balance of new and seasoned wood.
• Blending by experienced cellarmasters to achieve harmony between fruit, spice, and oak.
