Michter’s is one of America’s most respected whiskey producers, known for its meticulous approach to craftsmanship and its deep roots in US whiskey history. Although the current distillery is based in Louisville, Kentucky, the brand’s heritage stretches back to 1753, when a Pennsylvania distillery founded by Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk began producing rye whiskey. That original site would eventually become known as Michter’s, making the brand name one of the oldest in the American whiskey tradition.

The original Pennsylvania operation closed in 1989 during a downturn in the US whiskey market, but the brand was revived in the 1990s by Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman, who relocated production to Kentucky — the heartland of bourbon-making — while preserving its historic identity. Today, Michter’s operates three facilities: its main distillery in the Shively district of Louisville, its Fort Nelson Distillery and visitor centre on Whiskey Row, and its vast maturation warehouses in Springfield, Kentucky.
