Havana Club is Cuba’s most famous rum brand, a name synonymous with the island’s vibrant culture, tropical climate, and rich sugarcane heritage. First established in 1934 in Cárdenas by José Arechabala S.A., Havana Club quickly became a national symbol of Cuban rum-making expertise. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the brand was nationalised, and production moved to Santa Cruz del Norte, where Havana Club is still made today under the stewardship of Cuba Ron S.A. in partnership with global drinks company Pernod Ricard.

Havana Club rums are produced entirely in Cuba, following traditional Cuban rum-making methods. The base ingredient is molasses, a by-product of locally grown sugarcane. Fermentation is typically short, producing a light, clean wash, which is then distilled in a combination of continuous column stills for lighter components and copper pot stills for heavier, more aromatic spirit.

A key element of Havana Club’s style is its maestros del ron cubano, Cuban master rum makers, whose knowledge is passed down through generations. These maestros oversee the blending and maturation processes, ensuring the house style remains consistent while developing complexity across different age statements.

Maturation takes place in the island’s warm, humid climate, where ex-bourbon American oak barrels accelerate the ageing process. The result is rum that develops depth and character in fewer years than would be required in cooler climates, yielding a balance of smoothness, lightness, and flavour intensity that defines Cuban rum.

Flavour-wise, Havana Club rums are known for their light, clean, and slightly dry style, a hallmark of Cuban rum. Younger expressions lean towards fresh sugarcane, citrus, and vanilla, while older bottlings develop richer tones of dried fruit, chocolate, coffee, and warm oak spice.

The brand is also deeply intertwined with Cuban cocktail culture. Legendary recipes like the El Presidente, Cuba Libre, and Canchanchara rely on the crisp, balanced character of Havana Club as their foundation.
