Blanton’s is one of the most recognisable names in American bourbon, celebrated as the world’s first widely marketed single barrel bourbon. Introduced in 1984 by Elmer T. Lee at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, Blanton’s was created as a premium expression that showcased the individuality of a single barrel, bottled without blending from multiple casks. This innovation helped pave the way for the modern era of collectible and connoisseur-focused bourbon.

The brand is named after Colonel Albert B. Blanton, who worked at the distillery from 1897 until his retirement in 1952, serving as president from 1921. Blanton was known for his deep understanding of bourbon maturation, often hand-selecting exceptional barrels from a specific section of the distillery’s famous Warehouse H for private bottlings. Warehouse H remains central to the brand’s identity, it’s the only metal-clad warehouse at Buffalo Trace, which creates unique temperature fluctuations and speeds up maturation, producing rich, full-bodied whiskey.

Blanton’s is made from Buffalo Trace’s high-rye mash bill #2, giving the spirit more spice and complexity than lower-rye bourbons. Each barrel is carefully chosen at its peak, typically aged between 6 and 8 years, and bottled at 46.5% ABV (93 proof) without chill-filtration. Because no two barrels mature in exactly the same way, each bottle offers subtle variations in flavour, making it both a tasting experience and a collectible.

Blanton’s bottles are instantly recognisable thanks to their distinctive round, dimpled glass design and metal horse-and-jockey stopper. There are eight different stoppers in the series, each showing the horse and rider in a different stage of a race; together, they spell out “B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S”, a detail that has become a popular collectible pursuit among fans.

Flavour-wise, Blanton’s typically offers a balance of sweetness, spice, and oak depth. On the nose, expect vanilla, caramel, citrus peel, and warm baking spices. The palate is rich with honey, toffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of rye spice, followed by a long, slightly dry finish with oak and pepper. The Gold and Straight From The Barrel expressions amplify these qualities, with more heat, weight, and concentrated flavour.
