Williamson Blended Malt 12 Year Old Thompson Bros 50% 70cl

A fascinating blended malt here – not least because the distillery makeup remains a mystery. (Although some strategic googling might lend some clues to its provenance… you didn’t hear it from us.) What we do know is that this bottling is a magnificent example of peated spirit, aged for at least 12 years in a refill sherry butt. Bottled at a pleasing 50% ABV with no added colour or chill-filtration, it is a lively, complex dram that leans into the savoury side. Absolutely one to try. The label artwork is by Scottish illustrator KMG.

Nose: Remarkably meaty. There’s some sherry fruitiness in there, but cigar smoke, cloves, petrichor and walnuts are much more apparent. Intriguing.

Palate: The savoury character continues with eucalyptus, leather, and brine notes, before the sweetness of cloves and smoked pineapple come through. A green menthol provides extra complexity.

Finish: Sandalwood, more cigar smoke and chilli oil linger on and on.

About Laphroaig

Laphroaig single malt Scotch whisky is one of the most distinctive and polarising drams in the world, famed for its bold, medicinal peat smoke and maritime character. Produced on the southern coast of Islay since 1815, Laphroaig has a fiercely loyal following, with many drinkers either loving or avoiding its intense flavour profile entirely. This unapologetic style has earned it a reputation as one of Scotland’s most characterful whiskies.

Founded by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig has remained on the same rugged coastline for over two centuries, drawing its water from the Kilbride Stream and sourcing peat from its own nearby bogs. The distillery’s location, just metres from the Atlantic, exposes its warehouses to constant sea spray and salty air, a factor that many believe enhances the whisky’s briny, coastal qualities.

Peat defines Laphroaig’s identity. The distillery is one of the few in Scotland that still operates its own traditional floor maltings, producing around 20% of its malt in-house. The peat here is rich in sphagnum moss and heather, giving Laphroaig’s smoke an earthy, iodine-heavy, and medicinal quality that sets it apart from the sweeter peat found in some other Islay malts.

The core range showcases this signature character:
• Laphroaig 10 Year Old - the benchmark expression, with intense smoke, seaweed, iodine, and a touch of sweetness.
• Laphroaig Quarter Cask - matured in smaller casks for greater wood contact, adding vanilla and spice to the smoky core.
• Laphroaig Lore - a richer, layered dram blending a range of cask types and ages.
• Laphroaig 16 Year Old - mellower smoke, balanced with deeper oak and fruit notes.

Beyond the core range, the distillery regularly releases cask strength editions, limited finishes, and older age statements such as the 25- and 30-year-old expressions, which demonstrate how Laphroaig’s powerful spirit evolves with long maturation, gaining complexity while retaining its smoky heart.

Independent bottlings of Laphroaig are relatively rare due to the brand’s tight control over stock, but when they appear, they often provide intriguing variations - from bourbon cask-matured examples that highlight pure peat intensity to sherry cask versions that temper the smoke with dried fruit and spice.

Flavour-wise, Laphroaig is unmistakable: the nose is dominated by medicinal phenols, seaweed, and wood smoke, with underlying sweetness and citrus. The palate delivers a powerful wave of peat, supported by malt sweetness, brine, and sometimes herbal or earthy notes. The finish is long, smoky, and warming, leaving a lingering impression that few other whiskies can match.

The distillery’s “Friends of Laphroaig” loyalty programme has become legendary among whisky fans, giving members a lifetime lease of one square foot of Islay land and deepening the bond between brand and drinker.

Our Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes the unmistakable 10 Year Old, innovative cask finishes, and rare older vintages. Whether you’re seeking the full-force Islay experience or a complex, mature interpretation of peat, Laphroaig offers an unfiltered taste of Islay’s wild Atlantic coast — unapologetic, unforgettable, and utterly unique.
