Torabhaig Legacy Sound of Sleat 46% 70cl
Already a modern classic, Sound of Sleat (pronounced ‘slate’) is perhaps Skye distillery Torabhaig’s most in-demand single malt yet. Made from both Concerto and Laureate barley peated to at least 78PPM and a 72-hour fermentation with Pinnacle MG yeast, it’s a bold, expressive and exactingly balanced Scotch whisky. It’s got a fascinating bourbon cask make-up too, comprising whiskies aged in first-fill heavily toasted barrels, four-to-six-year old refills from Kentucky, and ones that have been used for over 10 years in the maker’s own warehouses. Released at 46% ABV without chill-filtration or colouring, it’s got the perfect combination of bonfire smoke, honey and stone fruits. Gorgeous.
Official tasting notes:
Nose: Notes of delicate orange lead followed by touches of apricot and popcorn lending sweetness to the maritime seaweed that echoes in the glass. Subtle pipe tobacco adds to the elegant smokiness and is rounded out by honey, vanilla and boiled sweets.
Palate: Light and zesty oak spice is joined by the rich and sweet bonfire smokiness that is so unmistakably Torabhaig spirit. Subtly waxy with hints of honey and vanilla balancing sea salt and seaweed that ebbs away to white pepper and sweet spice.
Finish: Like a sunset over the Sound of Sleat, this is lingering and elegant with notes of honey, storms and the ocean.
