About Macduff

Macduff single malt Scotch whisky is a coastal Highland malt known for its versatile spirit style and its primary life as the foundation of the Glen Deveron brand. Founded in 1960 by a group of Glasgow-based whisky brokers, Macduff is a relatively young distillery by Scotch standards. It was built during a period of post-war optimism and whisky expansion, with the aim of supplying both the blending and single malt markets. Its location, just west of the fishing town of Macduff on the Moray Firth, gives its whisky a subtle maritime character that sets it apart from many inland Highland malts.

The distillery was designed with efficiency and flexibility in mind. Unusually, Macduff operates with five stills, two wash stills and three spirit stills, which is atypical in Scotch whisky production. The shape of the stills is also distinctive, with upward-angled lyne arms feeding into shell-and-tube condensers, producing a relatively weighty, nutty spirit that can also be lightened depending on the cut points. This adaptability allows the distillery to create spirit tailored to the needs of different blends and bottlings.

Water is sourced from the River Deveron, which flows into the Moray Firth just beyond the distillery. The name Glen Deveron was adopted for the single malt brand to reflect this connection and to give the whisky a more romantic, regional identity. While much of Macduff’s output goes into blends such as Dewar’s, William Lawson’s, and others within the Bacardi portfolio, the Glen Deveron single malts have carved out a niche, especially in travel retail, where they are known for their smooth, nutty, and slightly coastal profile.

The Glen Deveron range often focuses on age-statement releases, including 10, 12, 15, 18, and 20-year-old expressions, many of which are matured predominantly in American oak ex-bourbon casks, with occasional use of sherry-seasoned oak for added richness. These whiskies tend to emphasise apple, nut, and gentle malt sweetness, with a rounded mouthfeel and soft spice.

Independent bottlings of Macduff, often released under the distillery name rather than Glen Deveron, are relatively common and can vary widely in style depending on cask type. Bourbon cask-matured versions often highlight crisp orchard fruit and fresh malt, while sherry casks bring richer tones of dried fruit, toffee, and spice. Well-aged Macduff from independent bottlers can be particularly rewarding, developing tropical fruit complexity alongside its trademark nutty depth.

Flavour-wise, Macduff’s house style is typically medium-bodied, with aromas of green apple, almond, and cereal malt, sometimes accented by a light coastal salinity. On the palate, it often delivers sweet malt, hazelnut, vanilla, and gentle spice, with a clean, warming finish. Its balanced nature makes it accessible for new whisky drinkers while still offering enough character to satisfy experienced palates.

Our Macduff Single Malt Scotch Whisky range includes both official Glen Deveron bottlings and independently bottled single casks, spanning young, vibrant releases to mature, complex expressions. Whether you’re exploring Highland malts with a coastal twist or seeking a versatile whisky that bridges sweetness, nuttiness, and subtle maritime character, Macduff offers a rewarding and often overlooked option.
