Ben Nevis 15 Year Old 2010 Milroy's Soho Selection 51.3% 70cl

We love Ben Nevis here at Milroy’s, and will always be in the market for exceptional casks to bottle for our Soho Selection series. This 15-year-old hogshead really fits that brief. It is awash with pear notes, but it’s rooted in a fascinating farmyard earthiness that speaks to the complexity of this Highland single malt Scotch distillery. There’s so much going on here – it’s a whisky to savour all evening long.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Initially toasted oak and soft malt come to the forefront, along with crisp breakfast cereal. This is soon overlaid by an abundance of tropical fruit, with pineapple, ripe banana and melon notes. With time, a dusting of cinnamon comes through, along with the sweetness of jam doughnuts, milk chocolate and fresh raspberries sprinkled with icing sugar. Coffee grounds give a sense of depth.

Palate: The sunny tropical fruit notes return, backed by a grounding earthiness. Red berries and a touch of chilli-chocolate add texture to the waxy mouthfeel, underscored by cream soda and buttery toast. Salted caramel and green apple emerge with time.

Finish: Medium length with warming oak and gentle pepper.

About Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis single malt Scotch whisky is a bold and characterful Highland malt, produced in the shadow of Scotland’s highest mountain. Founded in 1825 by “Long John” McDonald, a legendary figure in early Scottish distilling, Ben Nevis has maintained a reputation for producing robust, full-bodied spirit with a distinctive personality. Its location in Fort William, at the foot of the mountain, provides an abundant supply of pure water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn spring, fed by snowmelt and rainwater from the slopes of Ben Nevis itself.

For much of its history, Ben Nevis operated independently, supplying both blends and single malts. In the mid-20th century, the distillery made history by operating both pot stills and Coffey stills on the same site, producing both malt and grain whisky for blending. In 1989, Ben Nevis was acquired by Japanese drinks giant Nikka, a move that helped secure its future and expand its presence in the global single malt market.

The distillery’s style is unmistakable: rich, oily, and often slightly waxy, with a balance of malt sweetness, earthy depth, and a hint of coastal influence. Long fermentation times contribute to layers of fruit and complexity, while relatively short pot stills encourage a weightier spirit. Maturation in a variety of cask types, including ex-bourbon barrels, sherry butts, and wine casks, adds further depth and diversity to the flavour profile.

Ben Nevis is well-known among enthusiasts for its willingness to produce distinctive, sometimes challenging single malts that stray from the polished uniformity of bigger brands. Core range bottlings, such as the 10 Year Old, showcase a combination of orchard fruit, malt loaf, spice, and gentle smoke, while older age statements and special releases often reveal dried fruit richness, leather, tobacco, and a long, warming finish.

Independent bottlings of Ben Nevis have achieved near-cult status in recent years, with many single cask releases, particularly those matured in sherry casks ,drawing high praise for their intensity and individuality. Some have a slightly “old-school” style reminiscent of Scotch whiskies from decades past, making them highly sought after by collectors.

The distillery’s connection to Nikka also brings a unique cross-cultural influence. Some Ben Nevis spirit is used in Nikka’s blends for the Japanese market, and limited editions occasionally reflect this partnership through cask types or maturation approaches that nod to Japanese whisky-making traditions.

Ben Nevis remains a favourite among whisky drinkers who value authenticity and flavour over mass-market appeal. It has a loyal following precisely because it retains a sense of individuality, an honest Highland malt with a robust character and an ability to age gracefully over decades.

Our Ben Nevis Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes core range expressions, rare single casks, and limited editions that reflect the distillery’s versatility and depth. Whether you’re seeking a bold Highland dram for sipping, a sherry cask powerhouse, or a bottle with serious collector appeal, Ben Nevis offers a combination of heritage, craft, and flavour that rewards both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts alike.
