Yellow Spot Irish Whiskey
(0 products)Yellow Spot is one of Ireland’s most acclaimed single pot still whiskeys, part of the historic Spot Whiskey range produced by Irish Distillers at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork. With roots stretching back over a century, the Spot range was originally created by Dublin wine and spirits merchant Mitchell & Son, who began bonding whiskey in the late 1800s. Casks were marked with coloured spots of paint to indicate their intended ageing period, blue for 7 years, green for 10, yellow for 12, and red for 15.
Yellow Spot, matured for a minimum of 12 years, represents the refined, mature heart of the range. It is a triple-distilled single pot still whiskey, made from a mash bill of malted and unmalted barley. This traditional Irish style, which predates the widespread use of column stills, imparts a creamy texture, full body, and layered complexity to the spirit.
The Malaga cask influence is particularly rare in Irish whiskey and contributes to Yellow Spot’s signature profile. The result is a whiskey that balances the richness of sherry influence with the freshness and sweetness of wine cask maturation, underpinned by the smooth vanilla and toffee of ex-bourbon oak.
On the nose, Yellow Spot offers honey, apricot, and tropical fruit alongside toasted oak, baking spice, and hints of pot still pepperiness. The palate is silky and full-bodied, with layers of dried apricot, peach, and pineapple, complemented by marzipan, milk chocolate, and warming spice. The finish is long and satisfying, with a balance of fruit sweetness and gentle oak tannin.
Yellow Spot’s history is deeply entwined with that of the Mitchell family. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Mitchell & Son sourced new-make spirit from Jameson’s Bow Street Distillery, filled it into casks previously used for fortified wine, and aged it in their own bonded warehouses. This practice, now revived with modern cask management at Midleton, gives the Spot range its distinctive character and authenticity.
Today, Yellow Spot remains a relatively limited production whiskey compared to the more widely available Green Spot, making it a prized choice for collectors and enthusiasts. Its combination of age, cask diversity, and traditional pot still character has earned it multiple international awards and a strong reputation among connoisseurs.
Our Yellow Spot selection offers this 12-year-old whiskey in its purest form, showcasing the elegance, depth, and history that define Irish single pot still whiskey. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the Spot range, a collector of distinctive cask finishes, or simply a whiskey lover seeking a rich yet balanced dram, Yellow Spot delivers a taste of Ireland’s heritage, complex, refined, and unmistakably authentic.
