A Legacy of Kentucky Bourbon

The Wild Turkey story began in 1869, when the Ripy family opened a distillery on Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg. The brand name came later, in 1940, Austin Nichols executive Thomas McCarthy famously brought some of the company’s bourbon on a wild turkey hunting trip. His friends loved it so much that they began asking for “that Wild Turkey whiskey,” and the name stuck.

Master Distillers and Continuity

One of Wild Turkey’s defining features is the remarkable continuity of its distilling team. Jimmy Russell, who joined in 1954, became Master Distiller in 1968 and still serves as an industry icon. His son, Eddie Russell, has worked alongside him for decades and is now co-Master Distiller. Together, they have nearly 100 years of combined experience, a rare level of consistency in bourbon production.

Production and Style

Wild Turkey bourbon is known for its high rye mash bill (around 13% rye, higher than many bourbons) which contributes to its spicy, robust flavour. The distillation process retains more congeners for complexity, and the spirit is matured in new American oak barrels with a heavy char, known as “Char No. 4”, which imparts deep caramelisation, vanilla, and smoky sweetness.

Barrel entry proof is deliberately kept lower than industry norms (around 55% ABV), resulting in a richer, smoother whiskey after ageing.
