Tamdhu Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Tamdhu is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery celebrated for its unwavering dedication to 100% sherry cask maturation. Since its founding in 1897, Tamdhu has built a reputation among whisky lovers for producing rich, fruit-laden malts with a depth and complexity that rivals some of the most famous names in the region. Today, the distillery is owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, who have revived Tamdhu’s traditional style and reintroduced it to a new generation of enthusiasts.

A Distillery Born in the Boom Years

Tamdhu was established during the late Victorian whisky boom by a consortium of local businessmen, including several prominent blenders. Designed by the famed distillery architect Charles Doig, Tamdhu was intended to be a model of efficiency and modernity. Its location on the banks of the River Spey provided pure water, while its own railway siding allowed easy transport of barley, coal, and whisky casks.

After thriving through much of the 20th century, Tamdhu was closed in 2010. The site was rescued just two years later by Ian Macleod Distillers, also owners of Glengoyne and Rosebank, who committed to reviving its sherry-matured heritage.

100% Sherry Cask Maturation

One of Tamdhu’s defining features is its exclusive use of Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez, Spain, for both maturation and finishing. These casks, crafted from American or European oak and seasoned with sherry for up to two years before use, impart:
• Rich dried fruit notes.
• Layers of spice and nuttiness.
• A natural deep amber hue, without any added colouring.

The decision to mature all spirit in sherry casks, rather than using them selectively, gives Tamdhu its signature depth, complexity, and luxurious mouthfeel.
