The Spot range traces its origins back to Mitchell & Son, a Dublin-based wine and spirits merchant established in 1805. In the late 1800s, the Mitchell family began purchasing new make spirit from Jameson’s Bow Street Distillery and maturing it in their own casks — many of which had previously held fortified wines. The whiskeys were marked with coloured spots of paint on the cask ends to indicate their intended age: Blue Spot (7 years), Green Spot (10 years), Yellow Spot (12 years), and Red Spot (15 years). This simple system gave birth to one of Ireland’s most enduring whiskey brands.

Red Spot disappeared from the market for decades, surviving only in family records and the memories of older Dublin whiskey drinkers. Its revival in 2018 was the result of meticulous research by Irish Distillers and the Mitchell family, who sought to recreate the exact style of the original 15-year-old whiskey.

The influence of the Marsala casks is particularly notable, giving Red Spot a unique fruitiness that complements the traditional richness of single pot still whiskey.
