Plantation is a globally recognised rum brand renowned for its craftsmanship, transparency, and distinctive double-ageing technique that bridges Caribbean heritage with French refinement. Created by Alexandre Gabriel of Maison Ferrand, one of France’s most respected fine spirits houses, Plantation offers a wide portfolio of rums sourced from across the Caribbean and beyond, each shaped by both tropical and continental maturation.

At the heart of Plantation’s approach is its two-stage ageing process. Rums are distilled and initially matured in their country of origin, often for several years in ex-bourbon barrels under hot, humid conditions that accelerate maturation and develop deep colour, rich fruitiness, and spice. They are then shipped to Maison Ferrand’s facilities in Cognac, France, where they undergo further ageing in French oak casks, particularly those previously used for Cognac. This cooler climate slows the interaction between spirit and wood, refining the rum’s texture and adding layers of vanilla, floral notes, and gentle tannin.

One of Plantation’s defining features is its focus on transparency. Bottles often list detailed production information, including country of origin, distillation method (pot still, column still, or a blend), ageing locations, and cask types used. This level of detail appeals to enthusiasts who value knowing the story behind their spirit.

Flavour-wise, Plantation rums are often described as layered and harmonious, balancing the robust tropical character from their original maturation with the elegance and complexity imparted by French oak finishing. In recent years, Plantation has also been a leader in experimental cask finishes, using barrels that previously held sherry, port, madeira, or even beer to create limited editions with unique twists on the house style.
