Nc'nean Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nc’nean is a young, trailblazing Scotch whisky distillery on Scotland’s west coast, celebrated for its organic spirit, sustainability-first ethos, and modern approach to whisky-making. Officially launched in 2017 by founder Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean (short for Neachneohain, a figure from Gaelic legend known as the “Queen of Spirits”) was created to challenge conventions in Scotch production while remaining deeply respectful of the craft’s traditions.

Located on the Morvern Peninsula, Nc’nean is surrounded by rugged coastline, native woodland, and unspoiled wilderness, a setting that shapes the distillery’s environmental commitments. From its inception, Nc’nean set out to be 100% organic and net zero in carbon emissions, using renewable energy, recycling nearly all waste, and bottling in the UK’s first 100% recycled clear glass whisky bottles.

The distillery’s production philosophy focuses on purity and flavour through fermentation and distillation choices. Organic Scottish barley is malted and milled on site before undergoing a long fermentation of up to 114 hours, allowing fruity and floral flavours to develop naturally. Distillation takes place in traditional copper pot stills, with a slow, carefully cut run to capture a clean yet characterful spirit.

The flagship Nc’nean Organic Single Malt is bottled at 46% ABV, unchillfiltered and natural in colour, with notes of apricot, peach, citrus zest, creamy toffee, and gentle spice. Limited editions often experiment with different cask balances, yeast strains, or higher bottling strengths.

In addition to whisky, Nc’nean also produces botanical spirits, distilled from the same barley spirit but infused with herbs and flowers for a gin-like profile. This reflects the distillery’s openness to creativity and innovation beyond traditional Scotch categories.

Flavour-wise, Nc’nean whiskies lean towards fresh, fruit-led profiles rather than heavy peat or intense oak. This makes them versatile for sipping neat, enjoying with a splash of water, or even mixing into highballs and modern whisky cocktails, an intentional move by the brand to break down barriers around how Scotch “should” be enjoyed.

Nc’nean’s sustainability credentials are as integral to its identity as the whisky itself. The distillery is certified organic by the Soil Association, runs entirely on renewable energy, and has achieved zero waste to landfill. It is also a certified B Corp, demonstrating a commitment to ethical and environmental standards that go beyond the whisky industry norm.
