Makers Mark

Maker’s Mark is one of Kentucky’s most recognisable bourbon brands, famous for its smooth, approachable flavour, distinctive red wax seal, and handcrafted production. Founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. in Loretto, Kentucky, Maker’s Mark set out to create a softer, sweeter style of bourbon that would appeal to both seasoned whiskey drinkers and newcomers alike.

The Samuels family had deep roots in bourbon-making, stretching back to the 18th century, but Bill Sr. wanted to break from tradition. His aim was to eliminate the bitterness often found in whiskey at the time. To achieve this, he replaced the rye grain in the mash bill with red winter wheat, an unusual choice that remains the hallmark of Maker’s Mark today. This wheat, combined with corn and malted barley, produces a rounder, sweeter profile without the spiciness associated with rye-heavy bourbons.

The distillery itself occupies the historic Burks’ Distillery site, which dates back to 1805 and is now a designated National Historic Landmark. Every stage of production is carried out on-site, from milling and mashing to fermentation, distillation, and bottling. Maker’s Mark still uses cypress fermentation tanks and a roller mill to process grains, a slower method that preserves delicate flavours.

Maker’s Mark bourbon is distilled twice in copper stills and aged in new, charred American oak barrels for around six to seven years, although the brand famously uses taste rather than a strict age statement to determine when a whiskey is ready. Each barrel is rotated by hand during ageing to ensure consistent maturation, and all bottling is done at a precise 45% ABV (90 proof) for the flagship expression.

In terms of flavour, Maker’s Mark is known for its smoothness and balance. The nose offers soft caramel, vanilla, and hints of honey, while the palate delivers rich toffee, warm baking spice, and subtle fruitiness. The wheat component ensures a creamy mouthfeel, and the finish is gentle, with lingering sweetness.

The brand’s identity is also closely tied to its iconic red wax seal, still hand-dipped on every bottle. This distinctive presentation, combined with the brand’s approachable style, has made Maker’s Mark a staple in both home bars and cocktail programs worldwide.
