Ledaig
(0 products)Ledaig (pronounced led-chig) is the peated single malt produced at the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull, off Scotland’s west coast. Known for its bold, maritime smokiness balanced by a distinctly fruity and malty core, Ledaig offers a characterful alternative to Islay’s famous peat-driven whiskies while carrying its own island identity.
The Tobermory Distillery was originally founded in 1798 under the name Ledaig, meaning “safe haven” in Gaelic. Over the centuries it has seen multiple closures and revivals, but since its modern re-establishment it has produced two distinct styles: the unpeated Tobermory single malt and the heavily peated Ledaig. The latter has developed a strong following among whisky drinkers seeking robust smoke coupled with a sweet, oily, and coastal complexity.
Production and Style
Ledaig is crafted using heavily peated barley, with phenol levels often around 35–40 ppm, giving it a pronounced smoky aroma and flavour. Fermentation is relatively long, encouraging the development of fruity esters to balance the peat. The spirit is distilled in copper pot stills and matured primarily in ex-bourbon casks, though sherry casks and wine casks are also used for special editions and finishes.
The maritime influence is a key component of Ledaig’s style. Mull’s sea air imparts a subtle saline edge, while the robust distillate carries earthy peat smoke, peppery spice, and sweet malt notes.
Older expressions often develop more complexity, with softer smoke, richer oak influence, and layers of dried fruit and spice.
Collectability and Appeal
While not as widely known as Islay’s smoky giants, Ledaig has earned a loyal fan base among peat lovers who appreciate its distinctive island character. Independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage, and Douglas Laing also release single cask Ledaig expressions, often at higher strength, which have become sought-after by collectors.
Our Ledaig selection includes both the core age-statement whiskies and rare limited editions, offering everything from the punchy, youthful smoke of the 10 Year Old to the deep, complex layers of older and special cask releases. Whether you’re a seasoned peat enthusiast or exploring smoky whisky for the first time, Ledaig delivers a bold, maritime dram with a flavour all its own, a true “safe haven” for lovers of Scotland’s smokier malts.
