Glenkinchie Single Malt Scotch Whisky

(0 products)

Glenkinchie single malt Scotch whisky is one of the few remaining Lowland distilleries, known for its light, floral character and smooth, approachable style. Located in the rolling farmland of East Lothian, just 15 miles from Edinburgh, Glenkinchie has earned the nickname “The Edinburgh Malt” and serves as an ambassador for the Lowland region’s delicate, fragrant whisky style.

The distillery was founded in 1837 by brothers John and George Rate, during a period when the Lowlands were home to dozens of malt whisky producers. By the late 19th century, consolidation and closures had reduced that number drastically, but Glenkinchie survived, thanks in part to its role in supplying malt for blends. In 1914, it became part of the Scottish Malt Distillers group, which later evolved into today’s Diageo.

One of Glenkinchie’s defining features is its exceptionally large pot stills, among the biggest in Scotland, which contribute to the lightness and purity of its spirit. The distillery’s water comes from the nearby Lammermuir Hills, while its unpeated malt allows delicate floral and cereal notes to shine. Fermentation is relatively long, developing subtle fruit esters, and distillation is slow, encouraging a refined, clean profile.

The house style is often described as fresh and grassy, with notes of cut flowers, green apple, and honeyed malt. Maturation is typically in American oak ex-bourbon casks, which preserve and enhance these delicate aromas, although occasional sherry cask finishes add richer undertones.

The most widely available official bottling is the Glenkinchie 12 Year Old, part of Diageo’s “Classic Malts of Scotland” range. It replaced the earlier 10 Year Old in 2007, offering a slightly fuller body while retaining the signature Lowland lightness. Other official releases include Distillers Edition bottlings finished in amontillado sherry casks, which add nutty richness and soft spice, and occasional limited editions released through Diageo’s Special Releases programme.

While independent bottlings of Glenkinchie are rare, those that appear often offer older age statements and higher strengths, showing how the spirit can develop more complexity over time while still retaining its graceful, floral nature.

The distillery has also become a popular tourist destination, particularly following significant investment in 2020 as part of Diageo’s “Four Corners of Scotland” visitor experience initiative. The revamped visitor centre offers in-depth tours, tastings, and exhibitions that highlight Glenkinchie’s role in Scotch whisky heritage, making it an essential stop for anyone exploring the Lowlands.

Flavour-wise, Glenkinchie’s profile makes it ideal as an aperitif whisky or for those beginning their single malt journey. The nose typically offers spring flowers, fresh-cut grass, and light citrus, while the palate balances sweet malt, vanilla, and gentle spice with a touch of lemon zest. The finish is clean, crisp, and subtly warming.

Our Glenkinchie Single Malt Scotch Whisky range includes the signature 12 Year Old, limited sherry-finished releases, and rare independent bottlings. Whether you’re discovering Lowland whisky for the first time or seeking a refined, floral malt for your collection, Glenkinchie offers a graceful, historic taste of one of Scotland’s most understated whisky regions.
