Flora & Fauna Whiskies
(0 products)The Flora and Fauna series is a collection of single malt Scotch whiskies first introduced by United Distillers (now Diageo) in the early 1990s. The range was conceived to showcase the character of distilleries that, at the time, rarely released official bottlings because most of their spirit was destined for blending. By offering single malt expressions from these lesser-seen producers, the Flora and Fauna series gave whisky enthusiasts a chance to explore a broader spectrum of Scotland’s distillery landscape.
The nickname “Flora and Fauna” came not from the company but from whisky writer Michael Jackson, who used it to describe the labels’ distinctive designs. Each bottle features a hand-drawn illustration of a plant or animal native to the distillery’s surrounding area, paired with a short descriptive note. This naturalist style set the series apart visually while subtly linking each whisky to its home environment.
The bottlings were generally presented at 43% ABV, unpeated unless the distillery’s style dictated otherwise, and aimed to represent the distillery’s “house character” without heavy-handed wood finishes or experimental cask types. Many expressions leaned on traditional ex-bourbon and ex-sherry maturation, producing approachable but distinctive whiskies.
Over time, some releases were discontinued as distilleries launched their own official ranges, closed, or were repurposed. This has made certain Flora and Fauna bottles, particularly from silent or rarely bottled distilleries like Rosebank or Pittyvaich, highly collectible. Even the still-available bottlings are appreciated by enthusiasts as benchmarks for a distillery’s unadulterated style.
Flavour profiles across the series vary widely due to the diversity of distilleries represented. Speyside entries often show orchard fruits, honey, and gentle spice; Highland bottlings might lean towards heather, malt, and cereal notes; Lowland releases emphasise lightness and grassiness; and the few peated expressions carry coastal or smoky touches. What ties them together is a focus on clarity of distillery character, rather than heavy cask influence.
For many whisky drinkers, the Flora and Fauna range has served as both an introduction to lesser-known distilleries and a pathway to deeper exploration of Scotland’s regional diversity. It remains a respected collection, valued for its understated presentation, educational value, and drinkable quality.
Our Flora and Fauna selection offers both available core expressions and, where possible, rare discontinued bottlings. Whether you’re curious about a distillery you’ve never tasted, building a collection of Scottish whisky history, or simply looking for a well-balanced dram, Flora and Fauna bottlings provide an authentic snapshot of Scotland’s rich whisky heritage.
