Filey Bay

Filey Bay is England’s first single malt whisky produced entirely on a single farm, from field to bottle. Made by the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in Hunmanby, North Yorkshire, it represents a new wave of English whisky-making, one rooted in provenance, transparency, and coastal character. Since its inaugural release in 2019, Filey Bay has earned acclaim for its elegance, freshness, and subtle maritime influence, drawing comparisons with some of Scotland’s top single malts while forging its own identity.

From Field to Bottle

One of Filey Bay’s defining features is that every stage of production happens on the same family-run farm. The barley is grown in the surrounding fields, malted locally, and distilled just a short distance away at the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery. The distillery uses 100% home-grown barley, reinforcing its commitment to traceability and terroir.

Water is sourced from the farm’s own boreholes, ensuring consistent mineral content and purity. This tight control over raw materials allows Filey Bay to craft a whisky with a unique sense of place — a rarity in the world of whisky production.

Distillation and Maturation

Filey Bay is distilled in both traditional copper pot stills and a four-plate copper column still, a combination that provides a smooth, refined spirit while retaining depth and character. Maturation takes place primarily in first-fill bourbon casks from Kentucky, which impart vanilla, coconut, and gentle oak sweetness. Select releases also incorporate Oloroso sherry casks, red wine barriques, and other speciality casks to create richer, more complex expressions.

The distillery’s location just a few miles from the Yorkshire coast allows the whisky to mature in a cool, maritime climate, lending a subtle briny freshness to the spirit.
