Evan Williams is one of Kentucky’s most enduring bourbon brands, named after the man widely recognised as Kentucky’s first commercial distiller. According to legend, Evan Williams began distilling in Louisville in 1783, producing whiskey on the banks of the Ohio River. While the modern brand was launched by Heaven Hill Distillery in the mid-20th century, it draws on this historic narrative to celebrate Kentucky’s long-standing bourbon tradition.

Today, Evan Williams is produced by Heaven Hill Distillery, one of America’s largest family-owned spirits companies, based in Bardstown, Kentucky. Heaven Hill is known for its broad portfolio of whiskeys, but Evan Williams stands out as its flagship bourbon, consistently delivering high quality at an accessible price.

The bourbon is made according to a traditional Kentucky recipe with a mash bill of around 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye. The high corn content contributes to Evan Williams’ characteristic sweetness, while the rye provides a subtle spice lift. The spirit is distilled in column stills, aged in new charred American oak barrels, and bottled at various proofs depending on the expression.

Flavour-wise, Evan Williams is known for its approachability and balance. Expect aromas of vanilla, brown sugar, and light charred oak, leading to a palate of caramel, toasted nuts, and gentle spice, with a smooth, warming finish. The Bottled-in-Bond and Single Barrel expressions add more intensity and complexity, appealing to enthusiasts who prefer a fuller-bodied dram.
